the circle of life

The last couple of weeks in b/w travel for work and having my best friend visit I've been thinking quite a bit about the circle of life. A dear friend's father died rather suddenly last week while the week before that another dear friend gave birth to a healthy baby girl, their second girl, and today my father becomes husband number five to his fiancee. What else can you make of all of that other than life is a cycle -- we're born, we die and in between -- well it's what we make of it.

Today I spent the morning as a volunteer for the annual Run for Hope put on by the grief center where I co-lead a support group. It was pretty eye opening to see all the people and families proudly crossing the finish line wearing a t-shirt with a photo remembering and honoring their person who died -- mothers, father, grandfathers, grandmothers, daughters, sons, siblings and spouses -- pretty powerful stuff. And once again I'm reminded that life is a gift that we get to live in between entering and leaving, and it's really completely in our control to do with it as we please. And along the way, take some time to remember, honor and love those who once were a part of our time here and now are no longer. So I wore my own volunteer shirt that lists my mom's name among the others and knew that today she's proud (of all days coincidentally) that I'm living my life while also loving and remembering her.
