They say friends are the family you choose. I love that saying but I must say today it hit me on a whole new level. The idea that your longest and bestest friends are the people that know you the best, they know what you need, what will make you happy, sometimes even better than your family. And they know that it can still go a long long way to put in a phone call or send a card in the mail when something really matters vs just relying on text or Facebook to share feelings.
So today I was so happy to have received a congratulations card in the mail for having completed my rather intense coaching program. One of my oldest and dearest friends Margaret was not only supporting me all along the way with this big career decision but she knew just what to say to make me feel so special in her congrats card. As did my other dearest friend Cathy who sent me a note a couple weeks ago acknowledging all that I'm doing out here in LA and how proud she is of me. It was so very nice to hear from them and to receive a card in the mail (vs just bills!). Not only does it remind me of my mom b/c she loved sending me cards but it also reminds me that real communication hasn't completely died. That even though phone calls seem to be replaced with text messages and birthday wishes now are on Facebook Walls -- it was good to receive acknowledgement on a higher level than just what the world uses for communication today. It made me feel special. And it reminded me why these friends have always been my best friends, for over 25 years now.
So here's to friends, appreciating them, showing them how much you care, and letting them be the family that you got to choose. What can you do today to tell a friend how much they mean to you or how you're proud of the difference they are trying to make in the world?
