we are all hard wired

We are all "hard wired" so to speak -- set in our ways and living the world through a lens and perspective that we grew up with. It's who we are, how we were made, where we came from. And that's all well and good until you realize it's the hard wiring that's getting in your way. That the very things that define you... have been a part of you for as long as you can remember, the things your parents did and so now you do, the way you understand how to operate in the world, all of it. It's big stuff -- and as a result -- it's tough to change.

If only it was as easy as when we just hit re-start on the computer because the MAC 'color wheel of death' won't stop spinning. When that happens, we always have the force quite and the re-boot option but as human beings, it's not quite that simple. If it was, we'd all be walking around as the most "perfect" version of ourselves. Instead we have to train ourselves to look for the signs -- what's our 'color wheel of death' sign? When do we know when it's time to re-boot, to make a big change, to undo our hard wiring and re-set as the person who better serves who we are and what we want (vs who influenced us in our past and what others may want for us)?

I'm working on undoing some of my own hard wiring from how I grew up. My dad was and still is wonderful at finding the negative in every situation. And while I pride myself on being positive and always seeing the silver lining within the big picture, I realized after a session with my coach today that I too can fall into the day to day trap of leading with the anticipation of what could go wrong vs the vision of what could go right. Big difference. And I know this, I help people reframe things such as this every day but that doesn't make it any easier for me to see for myself sometimes that I too need to apply some of those same strategies and tools I pass onto my clients. So that I am, starting today.

Starting today I will be keeping a daily log where each day I will make note of what went right TODAY. Not what went wrong, what I fear will go wrong tomorrow or in two months or next year but what when right and what when right today. This will not only help me strengthen the muscle of recognizing and celebrating the positive but it will also keep me present in today. Allowing me to honor exactly where I am vs where I'm not or where I'm worrying I'll be or not be tomorrow/in the future. Because as I continue to remind myself, in this very moment, this is all we have - today - in our control. So how can I stay focused on what I love, and what I can control, and see the all the good in what comes each day.

Want to join me for this challenge? I'm going to do it for at least 30 days and then I'll report back -- who's in?
